Storm the Castle Duathlon: Conquering the Run Course
On Sunday, 18th May, the battle lines will be drawn as athletes take on the Storm the Castle Duathlon—a race that demands power, strategy, and a fair bit of grit! Whether you’re tackling the Sprint Distance (one lap) or the Standard Distance (two laps), the run course promises an exhilarating mix of speed, technical climbs, and breathtaking views. Here’s what to expect and how to conquer the challenge.
The Battle Begins
The race kicks off from Ludlow Rugby Club, where the battle cry will be raised before you charge into action. A flat and fast road section gives you the perfect chance to settle into your stride, taking you over Dinham Bridge and past the Cliffe Hotel along a scenic country lane. This is your moment to find your rhythm before the course throws its first major challenge your way.
The Infamous Lactic Ladder
At the turning point, it’s time to double back and face one of the most feared features of the race—the Lactic Ladder. This punishing sequence of wide steps is a true test of strength, forcing runners into a steep clamber up towards Whitcliffe Common. And just when you think the worst is over, the climb continues! But reaching the top is worth it—spectacular views of Ludlow and its majestic castle await, a moment to remind you why you’re pushing yourself.
Descent, Climb, and Castle Glory
What goes up must come down, and the next section is a sharp, technical descent back towards the river, requiring focus and agility. Over Dinham Bridge once more, there’s a final sting in the tail—a cheeky climb up to Ludlow Castle, where Sprint athletes head back to transition, while Standard athletes go for a second lap, making it a tough 10K challenge.
Run 2: The Final Push
The second run follows much of the same brutal route, minus the early out-and-back section. But you still have to conquer the Lactic Ladder before storming into the outer bailey of Ludlow Castle for a heroic finish.
Top Tips for Success
*Pace Yourself – Standard distance athletes will face the Lactic Ladder four times. Go out too hard, and it’ll bite back!
*Enjoy the Views – They don’t get much better than this!
*Know the Course – A pre-race recce will help you master the rhythm of the route.
