Join the Journey: Discover the Thrill of the Midsummer Mortimer Trail

The Midsummer Mortimer Trail offers a unique and relaxed race experience, combining physical challenge with the beauty of the countryside.

For those looking for a longer challenge, the 30 mile route from Kington to Ludlow is a welcome test of endurance. This option weaves through varied terrain, offering quiet country lanes and gentle hills that invite a steady pace. Alternatively, the 13 mile course starting from the Riverside Inn at Aymestrey provides a shorter route, yet it still captures the essence of the race’s scenic charm. In both cases, participants will eventually make their way to the historic finish at Ludlow Castle. With generous cut-offs, the event can be raced at pace or enjoyed as a more leisurely supported walk.

One of the key aspects of this race is its self-navigation format. Instead of following a single marked path, runners are given the challenge of finding their way using gpx, map and checkpoints along the route. This element not only adds an extra layer of strategy but also encourages participants to engage with the environment, making the experience both mentally and physically rewarding.

Following feedback from the 2024 series, this year the course includes extra manned checkpoints, which serve as useful rest and refueling spots. These checkpoints are spaced out to help guide runners while still allowing a sense of adventure. As you navigate from one checkpoint to the next, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the surrounding landscape—rolling hills, quaint villages, and open fields that are especially beautiful under the midsummer sky.

Runners can expect a race that is as much about enjoying the journey as it is about testing their stamina Whether you choose the longer route from Kington or the shorter option from Aymestrey, the trail promises a memorable day of running, discovery, and quiet reflection as you finish in the impressive shadow of Ludlow Castle.
